Happy New Year! How are you doing with that “get healthier” plan that you started last year, and the year before, and the year before that? Did you make a plan for this year too?
Resolutions are a great way to plan and to get back on track, but the BIGGEST reason that people don’t stick with it is that they don’t keep it SIMPLE!
If you have fallen off course or never got started, then know that you are not alone. More than 85% of people who make resolutions do NOT stick with them! That is a LOT!
MY BIGGEST TIPS: Break it down into small, attainable steps; be rational with achievable goals; make it known what you are doing; and believe in yourself. Keep it simple!
How you ask?
Don’t JUST plan to go to the gym.Figure out what fitness you may enjoy or if nothing else, what you can fit into your schedule and put at least 2 or 3 workouts or classes in your schedule to get you started, then add more as you are ready to invest more time. It will not happen overnight so be patient with the process.
Don’t JUST plan to eat healthy.Search for meal plans online, as part of your fitness program or pick up a best-selling nutrition book! Grocery shop and meal prep so you are able to follow the plan and stick to it. Know that there will be a few days and a few meals that you veer off course but as long as you get right back to it you will be just fine. Take it one day at a time!
Don’t be secretive about your health goals.Tell family and friends so they can support you rather than mistakenly sabotaging you with a plate of freshly baked cookies. Connect with fit friends in person and online. We live in a time where you can have a VIRTUAL fitness family so you aren’t all on your own if your friends won’t stop watching the newest reality TV show to join you at the gym. Support is key to staying on track so reach out for help when you need it.
If you don’t believe you can do it, you will struggle… a lot! We are capable of achieving so much more than we often give ourselves credit for. If you are struggling, there is someone else out there struggling too. Either search for people with similar challenges that have overcome them, or for someone who is on their journey too. Better yet, believe in yourself enough to reach out and invite people to join you on your journey to better health and BE the support and motivator… that ends up helping you as much as it helps them and truly the secret to how I stay on track!
Most of all, know that you are worth it! We ALL struggle at times, but we often show it in different ways. Living a healthy lifestyle can be very challenging as you get adjusted but the natural energy, the improved sleep, the healthy body that doesn’t needs meds, the weight loss that often accompanies it… these are all worth the time and initial energy investment to make it happen!
